WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING?

Assisted living facilities are for people needing assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) but wishing to live as independently as possible for as long as possible.  Assisted living exists to bridge the gap between independent living and nursing homes.  Residents in assisted living centers are not able to live by themselves but do not require constant care either. Assisted living facilities offer help with ADLs such as eating, bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with medications.  Many facilities also have centers for medical care; however, the care offered may not be as intensive or available to residents as the care offered at a nursing home. Assisted living is not an alternative to a nursing home, but an intermediate level of long-term care appropriate for many seniors.

Most assisted living facilities create a service plan for each individual resident upon admission.  The service plan details the personalized services required by the resident and guaranteed by the facility.  The plan is updated regularly to assure that the resident receives the appropriate care as his or her condition changes.

The term used for assisted living facilities differs across the country.  Other common terms for these facilities include:

· Residential care
· Personal care
· Adult congregate living care
· Board and care
· Domiciliary care
· Adult living facilities
· Supported care
· Enhanced care
· Community based retirement facilities
· Adult foster care
· Adult homes
· Sheltered housing
· Retirement residences

Assisted living is the generic term used across the country.

How Does an Assisted Living Facility Differ from a Nursing Home?

Nursing homes are designed to care for very frail people that are not able to care for themselves and have numerous health care requirements. Assisted living facilities are designed to assist elderly persons who are able to care for themselves except for a few activities. Assisted living facilities are often deemed necessary when the person in question needs help preparing meals, bathing, dressing, performing household chores, is sometimes confused, or is experiencing memory problems.

What are Continuing Care Retirement Communities?

Assisted living facilities are often connected with independent living residences and nursing homes.  The combination is known as a continuing care retirement community.   The resident can take advantage of the full range of services available and the ease of transfer to a different type of facility as his or her condition and needs change without needing to look for a new facility, relocate, or adapt to a new setting.  For example, the resident may begin in the independent living residences, move to assisted living as he or she needs help with activities of daily living, and eventually move to the nursing home as ongoing care becomes necessary.

The three different contracts available to people wishing to become a member of a continuing care community are extensive, modified, and fee-for-service.  All three cover shelter, amenities, residential services, and any short-term and emergency care.   The contracts differ in the amounts of entrance fees and monthly fees.

In addition to the costs mentioned above, an extensive contract also covers unlimited long-term nursing care with no corresponding increase in monthly payments.  This is the most expensive contract but may prove to be the most cost-effective in the long run.   The modified contract covers a specific amount of long-term nursing care in the monthly payments.  Once the specified amount is used, the resident must pay for any additional nursing care.  Residents under the fee-for-service contract must pay for long-term care at daily nursing care rates.  This is the least expensive plan because all future long-term nursing costs must be paid for separately from the contract.

Consult your financial planner to help you determine which plan is best for you.

What is Independent Living?

Independent living is for people who want to and are able to live independently but do not want to maintain a home.  Many people prefer to live in a community with others of the same age and with similar interests.  An independent retirement community allows for a great deal of social activities and trips.  Many independent living facilities also offer prepared meals and provide a wide range of amenities.

Types of Housing & care

Which one? You decide on the appropriate housing or care type -

55+ Lifestyles 55+ Lifestyle communities are 55+ age restricted communities that offer resort style amenities
and social activities. These may be ownership, rental or land lease communities.

Independent Living Independent Living Communities are designed to enable independent seniors to enjoy a lifestyle filled with recreational, educational and social activities amongst other seniors. Independent Living, often referred to as Retirement Communities, Congregate Living or Senior Apartments, are designed specifically for independent senior adults who want to enjoy a lifestyle filled with recreational, educational and social activities with other seniors.

Assisted Living Assisted Living provides a special combination of residential housing, personalized supportive services and healthcare. These residential settings maximize independence, but do not provide skilled nursing care. Assisted Living may offer the same features as independent living communities, with the added assistance of personal care. It is designed to meet the individual needs of those requiring help with activities of daily living, but do not need the skilled medical care provided in a nursing home.

Nursing Care Nursing Care, or Skilled Nursing Facilities, are designed for seniors who are in need of 24-hour
Nursing care. Nursing Facilities provide many of the same residential components of other senior care options including room and board, personal care, protection supervision, and may offer other types of therapy. Their onsite medical staff sets them apart from other types of senior housing. Nursing care is provided by registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LPN), and nurses aides at all hours of the day.

Continuing Care Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) are residential campuses that provide a continuum of care -- from assisted living to skilled nursing care, all in one location. CCRCs are designed to offer active seniors an independent lifestyle from the privacy of their own home, but also include the availability of services in an assisted living environment and on-site intermediate or skilled nursing care if necessary.

Home Care Home Care is a general term to describe services delivered at home to recovering, disabled, or terminally ill persons in need of medical, nursing, social, or therapeutic treatment.

Adult Day Care Daily structured programs in a community setting with activities and health-related and rehabilitation services to elderly who are physically or emotionally disabled and need a protective environment.

Alzheimer's Care Alzheimer’s Care provides specialized care and housing tailored to the special needs of individuals with this disease. Although many Assisted Living communities and Nursing Homes cater to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other related memory disorders or dementia, there is a growing trend towards facilities that provide specialized care and housing tailored to the special needs of individuals with this disease.

Low Income-Affordable 55+ Lifestyle, Independent Living and Assisted Living communities offering one of several different government assistance programs designed for low income seniors. Income restrictions generally apply and individuals must meet certain criteria to qualify for the assistance. The two most common programs are the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program and the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program.

Respite Care-Short Term Stay Temporary relief from duties for caregivers, ranging from several hours to days. May be provided in-home or in a residential care setting such as an assisted living facility or nursing home.

NURSING SERVICES

CRF takes great pride in the very high quality of nursing care provided to our residents. It is well known that among the biggest worries facing seniors and their families, whether living in their own home or in senior communities, is medical wellness. Health concerns can emerge at any time, and CRF believes strongly in being well prepared.

All CRF personnel who come in direct contact with residents receive specialized training, and continued close supervision from Nurse Administrators and the Executive Director of Nursing Services. This ensures that residents receive immediate and correct attention, whether he or she is experiencing issues from existing illnesses, or new and unexpected ones.

CRF recognized that proper training of all caregivers and supervisors, as well as kitchen and maintenance staff, would elevate the ease and comfort of daily life for all residents. So every CRF staff member receives ongoing  comprehensive training in the care of residents with dementia, in cooperation with The Alzheimer's Association and its guidelines.

CRF's Nursing Services include virtually all services that one could receive at a nursing home, including: blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring, medication management, foley catheter assistance, and so many more. But rather than receiving these services in a cold, institutional facility, all this  is provided in  our warm, home-style environments.

In addition to correct and immediate attention to medical issues, CRF is advancing resident wellness to new heights with our Eating Right program, now available to all CRF residents.

Menus and recipes provided by CRF's Hospitality Services are designed and prepared with the goal of improving the health of residents. , CRF meals and snacks include healthier choices, and avoid foods that contribute to decreasing immunity.

Since introducing the Eating Right program, we have seen a marked increase in overall resident health, many cases of decreased need for some prescriptions, and most importantly, so many residents are feeling better than they have in years.

INDEPENDENT LIVING - ASSISTED LIVING - ALZHEIMER'S/DEMENTIA CARE

To sum it all up, CRF residents get the best of care at the best cost possible. That's peace of mind for the resident and their entire family.

In so many ways, the success of CRF Senior Living Communities depends on the high level of hospitality and service. Each and every resident of our  CRF communities depends on these services. Hospitality has become the core ingredient for the ongoing maturation and continuous improvement of our growing communities.

The health and welfare of every individual in every CRF community is  our company’s main focus; and it all starts with our hospitality and services.

We operate our communities with a  “Five Star” approach, including 24-hour staffing and a focus on a healthy diet.

The founder of CRF has one main goal in the development of our food services. We often say, “Food is our medicine. Proper eating creates and maintains health, while improper eating may allow our immune system to become vulnerable to various degenerative diseases.” CRF is aware of the importance of providing the opportunity for our residents to improve their health, beginning with quality food for a quality diet. (We still love our chocolate sundaes and  root beer floats, just not every day!)

The entire dining experience is directed from a professional level of presentation, cooking techniques, selection, nutritional needs and appropriate portions. The “Fine Dining” approach allows personal interaction among every resident, as seating plans change daily and the atmosphere at each meal is refreshing. Our ever changing menu also includes “residents choice” where the recipe is followed from one our selected residents own recipe book!

Our trained service staff will be polite, properly groomed and have a genuine interest in helping residents enjoy their dining experience.

Our highly trained 24-hour Hospitality Desk representatives are responsible for security, emergency response, handling special needs and most other inquiries on a day to day basis. They have essentially become our team leaders as they have constant daily interaction with our residents. They also interact with most staff members as well, including our nurses, house  managers, maintenance and housekeeping staff. Our 24 hour Hospitality Desk is our link to our residents, while the resident can enjoy an independent home-like atmosphere within a complete full serviced safe environment. Our commitment to a clean and extremely sanitary home is exemplified in a  strict deep cleaning schedule, complete laundry services and a “White Glove” approach. Our housekeeping staff is extensively trained, alert and always caring for our residents.

We always like to say, there is never a dull moment in our communities. Our Special Events Calendar has included some very memorable moments for our residents,  such  as:
  • MOVIE AND GAME NIGHTS
  • AFTERNOON HIGH TEA
  • HOLIDAY FAMILY BUFFETS
  • SEASONAL COOK-OUTS
